Al-Shamie, a Syrian-born UK citizen, was later shot dead by police on 2 October after carrying out a separate attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, where two men were killed. Assistant chief constable Rob Potts stated that Bashir is a "dangerous individual with extremist views" who discussed preparing for "war" and was caught on camera discussing a terrorist attack. Investigators uncovered damning internet searches for attack planning, despite the pair disposing of their mobile phones, leading to Bashir's conviction.
