The Martin County Sheriff's Office intervened after receiving tips that Giustino was collecting stray cats along her postal route and she was uncooperative with previous attempts to address the situation. Sheriff John Budensiek noted that Giustino had faced similar issues a decade prior, receiving up to 65 civil citations for animal confinement, and suggested she may be suffering from a mental health issue. The goal of the arrest and animal seizure was to save the animals, prevent Giustino from repossessing them, and facilitate her entry into mental health court for necessary assistance.
