The MP for Central Manchester replaces Bridget Phillipson in the role, who is now the Women and Equalities minister. Ms Powell was among the Labour MPs who were early to help Mr Burnham’s campaign to return to Westminster in the Makerfield by-election.She previously served as the Leader of the House of Commons before being dismissed from the role during a cabinet reshuffle by former Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer in September 2025 following Angela Rayner’s resignation.
