A worst-case scenario could see South Africa’s shift to new-energy vehicles (NEVs) place an estimated 8 200 direct jobs at risk up to 2035, indicates a new research study by the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM), in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO). The study examines the employment impacts of South Africa’s shift from the manufacture and use of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, to the assembly and use of NEVs, which includes hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles.
