Research from Imperial College London, published in European Urology, found that only two out of nearly 3,500 men died from prostate cancer a decade after undergoing focal therapy, demonstrating excellent long-term cancer control similar to conventional treatments. The innovative approach specifically targets and destroys only cancerous tissue, resulting in a five-fold lower risk of severe side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction and rectal problems compared to traditional methods. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with an estimated 15,000 cases annually being suitable for focal therapy, representing 50-66 per cent of localised diagnoses. The UK Government recently announced extra funding to expand the provision of focal therapy, as currently only about 1,000 men per year receive the treatment despite its suitability for a much larger patient group.
