The blaze broke out around 3.30am at the two-story orphanage located in Mohammedia, an eastern suburb of Algiers. Rescue teams successfully evacuated five children with reduced mobility, and several of the injured children were transported to a hospital specialising in burns. Authorities have not released the ages of the child victims, and no adult fatalities or injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The tragedy occurred on Algeria's National Children's Day amidst a severe heatwave that has caused nearly 1,000 fires across the country in the past week, prompting president Abdelmadjid Tebboune to express his condolences.
