Divers finally found the 1,700-year-old Roman bridge historians had been searching for beneath a Swiss river

For decades, historians were fairly confident a Roman bridge once crossed the Aare River at Solothurn, Switzerland, but nobody could actually prove it. That changed when divers, hired ahead of renovation work on a nearby railway bridge, found wooden piles buried in the riverbed and dated them to the fourth century CE.
