SC directs states to frame policy for early release of aged, terminally ill prisoners

The Supreme Court has ordered all states to create a policy for prisoner release. This policy must be formulated within three months for elderly and terminally ill inmates. It will define clear eligibility criteria and procedures for compassionate release considerations. The court also asked the Centre to provide necessary technical and capacity-building assistance. States and the Centre must file compliance affidavits within six months.
