A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in Rotherham on Saturday in connection with Miss Widdecombe's death. Mr Farage told reporters he believed the attack was “premeditated murder” and mentioned a car appearing on her drive the day before her body was discovered. Former Conservative MP Harvey Proctor, an anonymous Labour minister, and former justice secretary David Gauke condemned Mr Farage's comments, urging against public speculation during a police investigation. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman of Devon and Cornwall Police also appealed to the public to avoid speculation, stating it is unhelpful to the investigation and distressing for the family.
