Silent layoffs and job cuts are becoming the new norm in India’s technology and software services industry. As a result, as many as 35,000 jobs could be cut during the current calendar year as companies increasingly prioritise productivity improvements in an intensely competitive environment.

Over 1,19,000 tech workers lost their jobs in the first half of 2026 as AI-driven restructuring reshapes the industry, with Microsoft cutting an additional 4,800 positions.

Between 10,000 and 15,000 tech professionals faced so-called silent layoffs till May, according to staffing firm TeamLease, which projects the full-year toll at 25,000-35,000.…
