The incidents commenced on Sunday at a prison in Negombo, a coastal town situated about 35 km north of the commercial capital city of Colombo. Authorities are currently clearing areas within the prison to account for all casualties, with the military placed on standby to provide support to the police if required. Television visuals depicted a significant police deployment outside the prison gates and a police bus transporting injured inmates from the facility.
