Many Americans lack fundamental historical knowledge, with only 61 percent correctly identifying Great Britain as the nation from which the 13 colonies declared independence. Over half of the population is unaware of the reasons for the colonies' declaration of independence or the primary purpose of the U.S. Constitution. A significant majority, 56 percent, are concerned that the U.S. may no longer be a free country, identifying corruption and politicians disregarding the Constitution as key threats. The survey also revealed that 38 percent of Americans find it acceptable for a president they support to stretch the Constitution to achieve their objectives.
