Galaxy Global Education, the Chinese company owning both institutions, was previously accused of asset-stripping in April after it closed Malvern St James in Worcestershire, just a year after acquiring it. Durham High School described the closure as the 'darkest of days' for its 281 pupils and staff, expressing deep sorrow that they would not be able to continue at the 'truly special school'. Weeks before the closure announcement, a director from Galaxy Global Education had written to parents at Durham High School, denying rumours of closure and reassuring them that the school remained 'fully operational'.
