U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley had previously ruled that the removal constituted an unlawful attempt to "rewrite the nation's history." The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals paused Kelley's ruling, suggesting the government was likely to succeed on appeal because the plaintiffs did not adequately demonstrate irreparable harm. At least 51 exhibits across 37 sites were removed, including one detailing George Washington's ownership of enslaved people, following an executive order signed by Donald Trump.
