A new study published in Gerontology suggests that the speed at which older adults begin taking a step, especially while performing a mental task, may be linked to their long-term survival. Researchers found that every additional 100 milliseconds taken to initiate a step under distracted conditions was associated with a 28% higher risk of death over the next 10 to 17 years. The findings indicate that simple movement tests could help identify older adults who may benefit from early interventions to support brain and mobility health.
