Iran takes surprise U-turn on Doha meeting as Trump’s aide heads to talks after recent escalation

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a post on X on Monday (June 29) that understanding with the United States was a bilateral matter, and that Tehran would "fulfil its obligations" if Washington adhered to the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding). Pezeshkian said Iran's response to what he called "unreasonable boasting and unfounded threats" was to rely on "rationality and human dignity in decision-making," while acting with "decisive and fearless defence" when needed. The U.S. and Iran on June 17 signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict. Under the document, both sides agreed to cease hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian and U.S. negotiating teams were due in Doha this week, but Iran said no meeting had been scheduled as weekend missile fire from both sides tested the interim ceasefire to end the four-month-old war.
