A European research team has uncovered how pied flycatchers, small migratory birds weighing just 12 grams, travel between Europe and Africa each year over distances ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 kilometers. Using tracking devices and cross-country experiments, scientists found that birds from different regions consistently converge in specific African wintering zones.
