Readings taken on the Central line, one of the capital's busiest, showed highs of 39.4C. Despite the extreme heat, commuters continued to use the Tube, with some noting air conditioning in their offices. Air-conditioned lines, such as the Metropolitan and Elizabeth lines, recorded temperatures around 22C, but only 40 per cent of trains currently have air conditioning.
