DUBAI: Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron have discussed post-UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon after some European countries have expressed support for an international force to replace the UN peacekeepers. Deployed in 1978 and significantly reinforced after the 2006 war under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has served as a stabilizing presence along the Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon. Its current mandate is expected to wind down by the end of 2026.
