The Cricket Regulator, after a separate investigation, determined there was "insufficient evidence to establish that any regulatory breach occurred”, thus taking no further action against either player. Stokes is now set to return as captain for the third Test at Trent Bridge, having been named in the England squad, after Joe Root captained the side in his absence during the second Test which New Zealand won.
