Giorgia Meloni was caught on hot mic telling world leaders at the G7 summit that she has quit smoking. While waiting for US president Donald Trump, French president Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to arrive for a round table meeting on Tuesday (16 June), some of the G7 leaders struck up a conversation about smoking. After stating that she needed some coffee to wake up, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz asked her: “And a cigarette?” “No, I stopped,” she replied, revealing she has not smoked for a month, as her fellow leaders applauded her. Last year, during the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit in Egypt, Ms Meloni said that she could not give up the habit as she “didn’t want to kill somebody”.

The fallback of conversations for leaders at the G7 summit naturally fell to the World Cup.

Hushed topics at Evian-les-Bains included Meloni quitting smoking, quips on the FIFA World Cup and Trump's comment on Greenland. | World News
