Most electricity contract switches go to renewables tariffs – Verivox

A record 81 percent of electricity contract switches concluded via price comparison platform Verivox so far in 2026 were to 100-percent renewable electricity contracts, the platform said. Opting for green electricity is becoming increasingly standard for those who want to switch electricity providers, the platform's analysis showed. Five years ago, the share of switches to renewable electricity suppliers was 68 percent. Verivox is one of the two major cost comparison websites in Germany that offer to carry out the electricity provider switch. “Environmental and climate protection do not always have to be the main motivation for choosing a green electricity tariff,” said Thorsten Storck, energy analyst at Verivox. “In many cases, tariffs where 100 percent of the electricity comes from renewable sources are now also the cheapest.”The average household electricity price in Germany is approximately 31.2 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), according to Verivox. The cheapest renewable electricity contracts cost 21.9 cents per kWh, the platform said. It did not mention the price of the cheapest non-renewable electricity contract. The expansion of renewable energy sources has meant that Germany’s electricity mix is the “cleanest ever” and has significantly driven greenhouse gas emissions down. Renewables accounted for approximately 56 percent of Germany's gross electricity consumption in 2025.
