South Africa spends R11.7m daily on foreign nationals in prisons, says Groenewald

Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald has revealed that South Africa spends R11.7 million a day incarcerating foreign nationals, with approximately 26,000 currently housed in correctional facilities nationwide. He said efforts to repatriate foreign offenders continue amid growing public pressure for the deportation of undocumented immigrants and concerns over the cost burden on taxpayers.
