Mr Qin was swept away by large waves on 27 May after slipping on a discarded fruit peel during a late-night walk in Haikou, the capital of Hainan. During his ordeal, he clung to a buoy, ate approximately 80 raw sea crabs for sustenance, and attempted to drink seawater and his own urine to quench his thirst and keep warm. He was found naked and unresponsive about 10km offshore on 2 June by two fishermen, Zheng Shizhong and Fu Tingsan, who provided immediate aid and brought him to shore. Despite suffering from severe dehydration, skin infections, and an inflamed digestive system from eating raw crabs, Mr Qin's condition stabilised after hospital treatment, much to the relief of his wife who had prepared for his death.
