U.S. hopes Iran will make a ‘good decision’ as Trump orders escalation over downing of Apache helicopter

In a Tuesday post on Truth Social, President Trump said Iran shot down a U.S. Apache helicopter patrolling the Strait of Hormuz and vowed that the U.S. "must" respond.

Trump has been saying for weeks a deal is imminent.

“Last night, the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump described in a post on Truth Social.

The pilots – who were patrolling the Strait of Hormuz – are safe, but the incident adds further strain to efforts to broker a peace deal.

The incident further strained a two-month ceasefire a day after Iran and Israel exchanged fire for the first time since the fragile truce took effect in April.

Trump’s remarks threw into deeper uncertainty the prospects for a truce announced on April 8 in the war in the Gulf.

A military response from the US could threaten the ceasefire that has been in place since 8 April, as Tehran and Washington have yet to negotiate an end to the war.

"We...worry deeply that US retaliatory strikes will trigger another destabilizing military exchange that has no winners," said the National Iranian American Committee.

Trump has repeatedly said Iran wants to make a deal with him to end the war and that they have agreed to concessions.
