Alaska’s rivers are turning rust-orange and scientists say the cause has been frozen for thousands of years

On a late-summer flight over northern Alaska’s Brooks Range, stretches of river that should look like glass suddenly appear stained the colour of iron oxide. From above, they resemble rust spreading through a cracked engine block.
