The traumatic incident took place just before she was due to sit her GCSEs, leading her parents to opt for a different educational path, meaning she did not complete them. Buchanan, now 42, explained on the Live, Laugh, Luke… podcast that she was taken after school by someone and held for a few hours, an experience she largely blocked out at the time. She sought therapy to help process the kidnapping, which happened around the time the Sugababes were preparing to release their debut single “Overload” in September 2000. Buchanan also shared that after leaving the group, she and Mutya Buena were denied re-entry to their school, unlike fellow original member Siobhán Donaghy, with school officials being dismissive of their pop star aspirations.
