A probe triggered by the March 2025 McLaren crash involving Nigerian rapper 3GAR has exposed widespread abuse of South Africa’s vehicle registration system. Investigators found that hundreds of luxury vehicles were allegedly acquired using fraudulently obtained Traffic Registration Numbers, with Gauteng emerging as the epicentre of the scheme. Nearly 90% of the vehicles flagged could not be linked to valid immigration records, prompting calls for reforms to tighten registration processes and curb fraud.
