Malfunction of this system can lead to lymphoedema, a swelling typically in the arms or legs, caused by either improper lymphatic system development (primary) or damage, for example from cancer treatment (secondary). Treatments for lymphoedema include compression therapy, exercise, and skincare. Some may also benefit from manual lymphatic drainage performed by a trained professional. However, there is little scientific evidence to suggest that manual lymphatic drainage alone provides significant or lasting treatment for lymphoedema. Claims promoting lymphatic drainage for skin health are largely unsupported by research, with any potential benefits being minor and temporary. Instead, a healthy lymphatic system is best maintained through a balanced diet, hydration, and regular exercise.
