A carbon assessment carried out by SAC Consulting for Sainsbury’s found that white eggs have a 12.7 per cent smaller carbon footprint compared to brown eggs. White eggs are laid by white-feathered hens, which have a longer laying life, lower feed requirements and produce the same egg output with less carbon demand, according to the research. The shift aims to help Sainsbury's meet its net-zero targets by 2035 for its own operations and by 2050 across all suppliers.
