‘A beautiful artist’: Mildred Howard’s archive comes to The Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, offering a peek into a singular creative mind

For more than 50 years, artist Mildred Howard has made memory and meaning her muses. In 2017, gentrification forced her out of Berkeley, the city where she was raised. Now, at 80, she’s getting her flowers — in a big way. Her first major museum retrospective opens at the Oakland Museum of California on June 12, and The Bancroft Library recently acquired her archive, ensuring her legacy is preserved for generations.
