The drugs were discovered on 9 February in a container declared to be carrying cacao beans, which had arrived from West Africa and was destined for Spain. Instead of cacao beans, officials found more than 400 black foil-wrapped packets, each containing about 20 blocks of compressed cocaine. The cocaine shipment was destroyed in Germany before the container continued its journey to Barcelona. Two suspected organisers of the shipment were arrested in El Ejido, Spain, on 14 May, with one suspect previously linked to another cocaine shipment by Spanish customs.
