Shortly after winning the trophy, the player received a memorable surprise as his loved ones gathered to celebrate a landmark achievement in his NHL career during a regular BBQ party at his home.

Werenski earned 113 first-place votes, beating out finalists Cale Makar and Rasmus Dahlin.

Boston defenseman Charlie McAvoy had four top five selections in the voting for the prestigious award.

After finishing as runner-up in Norris voting last season, Zach Werenski earned 113 first-place votes among 198 ballots cast.

Werenski won a gold medal for Team USA this year and his first Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman.
