A necropsy is scheduled for this week to determine the cause of death for the juvenile male whale, which was found dead and stranded off the Danish island of Anholt on 14 May. 'Timmy' had been tracked since its first sighting off the German coast on 3 March and became the subject of a contentious rescue effort to return it to its natural Atlantic habitat. The whale's presence in the Baltic Sea, an unsuitable habitat, led to repeated strandings, clear distress, and a severe skin condition due to the low salt content. Despite a final rescue attempt on 2 May, financed by two millionaires, experts had voiced concerns about the whale's poor health and slim chances of a successful return to the open seas.
