March and March founder Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has appealed for calm and restraint following the looting of six foreign-owned shops in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal. As tensions mount ahead of the movement’s June 30 deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa, Ngobese-Zuma and activist Nkosikhona Ndabandaba insisted the campaign is not intended to trigger violence or xenophobic attacks. Meanwhile, police have intensified monitoring and warned that any unlawful protests, road blockades or public violence will be dealt with decisively.
