Mamdani stated that COGE aims to make the city government “work smarter, faster, and more effectively for working people” and will hold hearings across all five boroughs. The initiative draws parallels to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk during the Trump administration, which aimed to cut government waste. DOGE resulted in the removal of over 300,000 federal workers and contractors and was widely unpopular, with nearly half of voters believing it cut too much. COGE will be chaired by Patrick Gaspard, a former executive director of the Democratic National Committee, with its first public hearing scheduled for 9 June.
