The isolation for these four Australian citizens, one permanent resident, and one New Zealand resident will now last 42 days, until 23 June, at a facility near Perth. The decision to extend the quarantine from the initial 5 June release date was based on advice from health authorities, with Health Minister Mark Butler confirming the individuals remain well. The hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius, which sailed from Argentina to Cape Verde, affected at least 11 passengers and resulted in three deaths. The virus, transmitted through rodent waste, can cause a potentially fatal pulmonary syndrome, while the cruise ship undergoes cleaning in Rotterdam and a British national was medically evacuated to the UK.
