The officers' actions occurred after Vickrum Digwa, who was later found guilty of Nowak's murder, claimed he was the victim of a racist attack by Nowak. Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Constabulary’s temporary Deputy Chief Constable, Robert France, apologised, saying officers did not immediately understand the severity of Nowak's injury, though they provided first aid within minutes of engagement.
