Local officials released a joint statement saying a tank containing white liquor, a chemical used in the paper pulping process, had ruptured early Tuesday morning.

Authorities said some victims had suffered burns or inhalation injuries and there was no immediate threat to the public.

The tank contained ‘white liquor’, a corrosive substance that consists mainly of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphide.

The rupture caused the huge circular tank to buckle on one side, and officials said they would only work during daylight because of the dangers.
