India’s rapid solar expansion is creating an unusual crisis where electricity prices on the Indian Energy Exchange briefly fell to zero in May because solar generation exceeded demand and grid capacity. Rajasthan, which holds 27% of India’s solar capacity, has been forced to curtail up to 80% of solar output due to weak local demand, lack of battery storage and insufficient transmission infrastructure to move surplus power to other regions.
