More than 300 residents were evacuated before the catastrophe on 28 May 2025, which saw a torrent of rock, soil, and ice engulf Blatten.Experts attribute the glacier collapse to climate change, specifically the thawing of permafrost in the Alps.Former residents, including hotel owner Lukas Kalbermatten, are having to rebuild their lives, with plans underway to reconstruct Blatten by around 2030.
