Xu Yao poisoned Lin Qi in December 2020, resulting in Lin's death on Christmas Day, following a dispute over Xu being sidelined from business operations. Xu was sentenced to death in 2024 after being convicted of Lin's murder, with his execution confirmed by Yoozoo on 21 May. Lin Qi's company, Yoozoo, owned the film rights to The Three-Body Problem science-fiction trilogy, and Lin was an executive producer on its Netflix adaptation. The conflict stemmed from Lin appointing Xu to lead the Three-Body Universe in 2018 but later reassigning key business operations to other executives, despite Xu's involvement in securing the Netflix deal.
