Former state attorney general Ken Paxton ends four-decade political career of senator John Cornyn in party run-off vote

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has defeated four-term Sen. John Cornyn in a massively expensive, drawn-out U.S. Senate primary race

NBC News projects that Paxton, who received a late endorsement from Trump, will advance to the general election to face Democrat James Talarico.

Cornyn led the March primary with 42% of the vote, narrowly ahead of Paxton’s 40.5%, sending both to a runoff.

The win means Trump — and Democrats — get their preferred candidate for a general election matchup with James Talarico.
