Assam has introduced the Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026, in the State Assembly, becoming the latest State to move towards a UCC. The Bill proposes a ban on polygamy, mandatory registration of live-in relationships, and changes to laws governing marriage, divorce and succession. If passed, Assam will become the third State after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to enact a Uniform Civil Code.

Muslim organisations in Assam urge government consultations on the proposed Uniform Civil Code before legislative implementation.

Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said tribals will be kept outside the purview of UCC in line with similar provisions in Uttarakhand and Gujarat. | India News
