Mortgage Update For October 17, 2024Mortgages have downshifted a bit from highs earlier in the week but continue to fluctuate with the latest economic news. Retail sales were up more than expected, and jobless claims were down, showing that the economy is still fairly robust. Last week, mortgage applications fell 17%, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). Year over year, the MBA refinance index was up 111% while the purchase index was only up 7%. MBA vice president Joel Kan noted that three weeks of higher mortgage rates has cooled the pace of applications. While rates are still solidly down from where they were a year ago, some buyers may still be sitting on the sidelines hoping that they will go down further. Most analysts expect mortgage rates to remain relatively flat for the rest of the year.
