The employee, Laurel Torode, a member of the United Church of God, was reportedly dismissed after requesting not to work on Saturdays in observance of the Sabbath. Torode, who managed delivery drivers in an Austin restaurant from September 2023 to February 2024, had initially disclosed her inability to work Saturdays during her job interview. After months of accommodation, Hatch Trick allegedly demanded she work Saturdays or accept a non-managerial position with lower pay, reduced benefits, and fewer hours. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed the lawsuit, seeking compensation for Torode and an end to the alleged religious discrimination, citing Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
