The An-26 aircraft, conducting a scheduled flight, lost contact around 6pm on Tuesday over the peninsula, which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014. Russia's Defence Ministry said that the preliminary cause of the crash was a technical malfunction, with no external impact involved. Sources at the crash site confirmed the plane plummeted into a cliff face, prompting a criminal probe into violating flight regulations. The An-26 model, in service since the late 1960s, has been involved in several deadly crashes over the last decade, including incidents in Ukraine, South Sudan, and Ivory Coast.
