The Federal Communications Commission said on Thursday it has approved the sale of some local broadcast TV stations from Tegna to Nexstar.

The FCC approved the sale of Tegna and its television stations to Nexstar, which will now have a media footprint that reaches 60% of U.S. households.

Nexstar has closed its $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna after winning approval from the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice.

Critics fear the consolidation will add to strains facing local news and degrade coverage.
