Powell's term as Fed chair is scheduled to end on May 15, but he could elect to stay on the board to finish his term as a Fed governor.

"If my successor is not confirmed by the end of my term as chair, I would serve as chair until he is confirmed. That is what the law calls for."

Powell has accused the DOJ of investigating him in retaliation for his refusal to lower interest rates as much or as quickly as Trump has demanded.
