Celebrations reportedly erupted across Iran and in other parts of the world after Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in a U.S.–Israeli strike. Donald Trump announced on social media that Iran’s leader had died in the attacks on Saturday, 28 February. Iranian state media later confirmed the death and declared a 40-day mourning period. Footage circulating online appears to show crowds gathering in Iranian cities, with some people dancing and cheering following the announcement.

“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
